After all, all I do is sit and come up with ideas sometimes they’re good, sometimes great, but most of the time they’re pretty mediocre. When I got my O1b, I felt like the biggest fraud the industry has ever seen. Remember why you moved themīe real about it - you moved them because they will make you a shit ton of money. I received regular texts/messages from the leadership team, which made all the difference. It’s not your place as an agency to fix this by any means, but being aware that this whole process is an emotional rollercoaster is paramount. You’re eating frozen Trader Joe’s rice and two eggs on a Friday night. And in a city like New York, you can’t afford to meet up with everyone and anyone people are trying to connect you to because you can’t afford it. There will be some anxious parents down the phone and inevitable periods of loneliness. Emotions are high regardless of your professional status when you move, and if you’ve ever done so without having a cry at some point, I don’t believe you. What’s love got to do with it? Everything.Įverything, when you’re a gazillion miles away from home and most likely have no spouse or family that came with you or savings, to fly back home often. Speak beforehand about the first couple weeks and make adjustments in time for doctor’s appointments, bank meetings etc, but give them work.Īsk them to save the world/rainforests/elephants/children/any niche boring problems random clients are having. Our media editor explores the biggest media buys and the trends rocking the sector. And because you wouldn’t move these creatives if they weren’t good or passionate enough, the work is what they love. Even if you struggle to adapt to a new place and its complexities, the work is a constant mistress demanding the best of you as usual. The work is one thing you know how to do, and do it fucking well. You’re new to the concrete jungle and have zero idea how to use the laundromat or subway while getting used to the scuttling of cockroaches around your apartment, which looks like a crack den - minus the crack. You can’t conjure up that sort of money as a young creative. And for those of you who say, ‘Just rent an Airbnb for a few months!’- you’re looking at a monthly rental cost of about five thousand dollars minimum in NYC. Having an agency (like Citizen) offer a buffer of a place to sleep when things go wrong (because they will) is a lifeline. Even though I found a US guarantor (and I believe some agencies can offer this), my furniture didn’t turn up in time. So, providing a place to stay for those first few weeks while structural essentials are figured out is a must. You also need a US credit record, which you obviously don’t have because you’ve been there for five days and don’t have a bank account. You can’t rent a place without a US bank account you can’t get a bank account until you have a social security number you can’t get a social security number until you get here and have been to the office and then waited three weeks for it to come. I’ve found that coming as an immigrant to New York and starting to build a life from scratch is a game of chicken and egg. But if you’ve got your eye on some jazzy snazzy bold young creatives in yours and want to exploit their juicy potential by moving them while also recognizing the importance of caring for them in a new and vulnerable situation, here are some things you need to know to avoid being an asshole. I got lucky with my agency and the kindness and support that it showed me. Army Wives (TV Series 20072013) cast and crew credits, including actors, actresses, directors, writers and more. Now that you know the folders to sync, let’s get to it! We will start with the LocalDrafts folder. (Sorry, Daniel, if you are reading this and rolling your eyes). I may be missing something crucial, but so far this sync solution seems to be working great with these four folders synced. The four folders that you need to sync are: LocalDrafts, PendingUploads, Posts, and UploadedFiles. In the MarsEdit folder, you will note the following structure: In our case, you want to dive into your user “Library” folder like so: /Users//Library/Application Support/MarsEdit, where is your own user folder. You may have to hold down the “option” key in the Finder’s “Go” menu to access the Library Folder. Just follow the steps! First, you have to choose a folder on your hard drive that you would like to sync. The interface of MacDropAny attempts to make the process as easy as possible, even for novice users. Once you are certain that all computers have stopped syncing, you can start MacDropAny. Other sync solutions will have similar mechanisms to pause syncing quickly. On Dropbox, for example, you can easily pause syncing using the menubar app. The first thing that you must do is to turn off syncing on ALL computers with which you want to sync MarsEdit. This is well worth it, so that we continue to see great things come from him! It is “donation ware,” which means that it is free to try, and if you would like to support the developer (who is a student at Princeton University), you can make a donation via the app. MacDropAny also works with many other syncing solutions - go to the website to check it out. There is really nothing wrong with using the command line, but if you prefer a graphical interface or if you are not comfortable with command line (so that there is no question as to what you just did), MacDropAny will serve you nicely. MacDropAny essentially will take any folder on your Mac and sync it with Dropbox (sort of…it actually makes a symbolic link, which creates a reference to the folder on Dropbox, but the original folder remains outside of Dropbox). There are a lot of ways to do this, most of them involving command line foo, but I really like the app MacDropAny by Zibity. When I write a draft of a post using MarsEdit on one computer, a problem arises because that draft is stored locally on the one machine, and the other machine never sees it because there is no built-in syncing system in MarsEdit (yet!). I have an iMac at home, and I take my MacBook Air practically everywhere I go. It makes the blogging workflow so easy, and I appreciate all of the time and care he puts into the app. MarsEdit is, in my opinion, the best blogging software out there. I just started getting into blogging again, and I rediscovered the fantastic app MarsEdit by Daniel Jalkut at Red Sweater Software. Syncing MarsEdit between multiple Macs using MacDropAny Wearing sun hats and cool, wet clothing will help regulate your core body temperature during warmer hikes. The hike out of the canyon will likely take twice as long as the hike down. Consuming twice as many calories as during normal exercise is realistic for summer canyon hikes. It is critical to determine before your hike your needs for fluids and for snacks high in calories and salts. Over-the-shoe traction devices are highly recommended. Hard ice often conceals potentially hazardous passages. In winter and early spring, temperatures can drop below 32☏ (0☌) and upper portions of this steep trail become dangerously icy. Once you have researched your trip and are confident in what to expect on the trail, leave your itinerary with someone who will notice if you are overdue and report it to 911. Trail InformationĪverage Hiking Time: 2-4 hours Hike Smart For most visitors, the 3-mile (4.8 km) round-trip hike from the South Rim requires a 2-4 hour commitment depending on health, hiking ability, and rest stops. Just over 1,100 feet (335 m) below Grand Canyon's rim, this first rest area offers visitors a taste of the struggles and rewards Grand Canyon's steep trails present. An emergency telephone is located in the resthouse with a direct line to Park Dispatch in case of emergencies on the trail. During the summer months, a water filling station at the resthouse provides potable water. This popular day-hike destination on the Bright Angel Trail provides relief from the weather and extremes of all seasons, be it the summer heat or storms in the winter and spring. This utilizes stem separation and automated level adjustments as you go from one track to the next.įor those who enjoy cutting and scratching, there are crossfade settings that use automated curves and spatial effects so, for example, outgoing track vocals can be dropping out as you cut into the next track automatically. One of the highlighted modes is the Neural Mix (Harmonic Sustain) setting. There are now a variety of settings for the crossfader beyond the usual curves. Fluid Beatgrid is supposed to use AI to accommodate for those shifts and find the right points to mark.Ĭrossfader Fusion is where stems, automation and those beatgrids all come into play. Songs with live instrumentation that tend to shift tempo naturally, EDM with varying tempo shifts during breakdowns and even just older dance tracks that tend to meander slightly throughout playback have been pain points. While adaptation entails preserving existing structures and ways of being, transformation is often associated with large-scale, profound and deep-rooted changes. If the adaptative action is not adequate to overcome the disaster risk, societies will need to transform. This is sometimes described as incremental adaptation, where solutions are centred on technological and managerial fixes that are responsive to a particular event or have a preventative effect. However, when societies exceed their ability to cope, they should be able to adapt to the adverse changes they face. By this definition, coping is the first and ideal strategy for managing risk. Resilience capacity is described as a combination of: (i) shock absorbing and coping (ii) evolving and adapting and (iii) transforming. Resilience is a combination of coping, adaptive and transformative capacitiesĪdaptation is sometimes seen as being part of resilience. This is an area where, considering the potential failure or breach of flood defences in the face of increasing flood risks, it is crucial to maintain a holistic and diverse range of solutions. Building large-scale flood barriers, for example, is a flooding adaptation measure that often creates a false sense of security and as a result leads to a decrease in other flood risk-reduction and resilience activities. Increasing adaptability to a particular range of shocks may also decrease general resilience to new or as-yet unknown shocks. For example, farmers who have invested in large-scale irrigation infrastructure may be reluctant to abandon it, even if that irrigation infrastructure becomes less efficient or sustainable as rainfall becomes less reliable. This is a result of the ‘ sunk-cost effect ’, the phenomenon by which past investments are afforded more weight in decision-making processes than future opportunities, challenging rational choice. Implementing large-scale and costly adaptation projects may, for example, lead to a reduction in ‘response diversity’ – the number of available options for responding effectively to a disaster or adverse climate impact. Taking action on adaptation has implications for resilience: in many cases it increases resilience but there is evidence it can also be undermining. Adaptation can build or undermine resilience As such, building climate resilience requires a holistic and multi-dimensional approach to enhance communities’ social, human, natural, physical and financial capacities to cope with and recover from the impacts of climate change. This entails a range of actions across policy, infrastructure, services, planning, education and communication. On the other hand, resilience to climate change is defined as the capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from the impacts of hazardous climatic events while incurring minimal damage to societal wellbeing, the economy and the environment. More rarely, adaptation may seek to take advantage of opportunities that climate change could bring, such as making new crop choices suited to the changed climate. Such measures could include building sea walls to protect people against sea level rise, installing new irrigation systems to combat water scarcity, or planting trees to reduce air pollution and cool urban areas. Discussions on adaptation often advocate taking specific urgent actions before it is no longer reasonably possible to adapt to, minimise, or avoid harm from climate change. In the context of climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) defines adaptation as the process taken to “ adjust to the actual or expected climate and its effects ”. However, in practice, the distinctions and relationships between resilience and adaptation are more complicated and less easily defined. At its most basic, adaptation refers to a process or action that changes a living thing so that it is better able to survive in a new environment, whereas resilience describes the capacity or ability to anticipate and cope with shocks, and to recover from their impacts in a timely and efficient manner. ‘Adaptation’ and ‘resilience’ are often used interchangeably in policy and academic discourse, and while they are complementary concepts, there are important differences in these terms. We aren’t 100% sure which is true, especially with different platforms having different algorithms -but we suggest avoiding keeping songs on repeat just in case.
